Piperacillin & Tazobactam Injection

Piperacillin and tazobactam injection is indicated to treat pneumonia and skin, gynaecological, and abdominal (stomach area) infections due to bacteria. Piperacillin belongs to a class of drugs called penicillin antibiotics. It kills bacteria that cause infection. Tazobactam belongs to a class called beta-lactamase inhibitors.

How Piperacillin + Tazobactam works ?

• Piperacillin + Tazobactam is the combination of two drugs: Piperacillin and Tazobactam. Piperacillin belongs to the class of antibiotics. It inhibits the synthesis of the bacterial protective covering, which is necessary for the sustenance of bacteria. Tazobactum is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that decreases resistance and increases the effectiveness of Piperacillin on bacteria.
• Antibiotics like piperacillin and tazobactam injection won’t treat colds, flu, or other viruses. When antibiotics aren’t needed, they won’t help your infection get better and can even make it worse.

What special precautions must I take?

• Inform your doctor and pharmacist about what other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take while using piperacillin and tazobactam injection. Your doctor may need to adjust the doses of your drugs or keep a close eye on you for side effects.
• You should be aware that piperacillin and tazobactam can make hormonal contraceptives (birth control pills, patches, rings, and injections) less effective. You will have to use some other form of contraception to avoid pregnancy while taking piperacillin and tazobactam injection. Discuss with your doctor other options for avoiding pregnancy while you take this drug.
• Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had cystic fibrosis (a genetic condition that interferes with breathing, digestion, and reproduction) or kidney disease.
• If you become pregnant while taking piperacillin and tazobactam injection, inform your doctor.
• If you are undergoing surgery, including dental surgery, inform the doctor or dentist that you are getting piperacillin and tazobactam injection.

What are the side effects?

Side effects are possible with piperacillin and tazobactam injection. Inform your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not disappear:

• diarrhea
• constipation
• nausea
• vomiting
• heartburn
• stomach discomfort
• fever
• headache
• soreness in the mouth
• trouble falling asleep or sleeping

What should I be aware of?

• Follow all appointments with your physician and with the laboratory. Your physician will prescribe some laboratory tests to monitor your body’s reaction to piperacillin and tazobactam injection.
• Inform your doctor and the laboratory staff before any laboratory test is done that you are on piperacillin and tazobactam injection. If you have diabetes, piperacillin and tazobactam injection may interfere with some urine tests and give a false result. Discuss using other glucose tests while taking piperacillin and tazobactam injection with your doctor.
• Maintain a written record of all of the prescription and over-the-counter (over-the-counter) medications, vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements that you take. Take the list with you when you see a doctor or when you are hospitalised. You should also have the list available in emergencies.
