Lactulose belongs to the group of chemicals known as anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat acne. Lactulose syrup is also used to cure hepatic encephalopathy. Constipation refers to irregular bowel movements with frequent loose, painful, and hard stools. Hepatitis encephalopathy is a liver disease in which toxins accumulate in the blood which are normally cleared by the liver.
Lactulose extracts ‘lactulose’ which works by secreting water from the body and intestines. This loosens the dirt and makes it easier to walk through. On the other hand, it also decreases the level of ammonia in the blood of liver disease sufferers which draws ammonia from the blood to the colon, thereby facilitating the detoxification of the body.
Lactulose works by absorbing water into the intestines by osmosis, making stools softer and easier to handle. Take at least 2 hours after taking any other medication, as it can interfere with the absorption of other medications. It should be taken at bedtime as it takes 6 to 8 hours to show effects.
Lactulose is used to treat constipation which manifests as irregular stools and thick, dry stools. It is also used in patients with acute liver disease characterized by confusion, tremors, and decreased consciousness. Take this syrup as prescribed by your healthcare professional. Don’t take this syrup in a high dose.
Lactulose is used to treat diarrhea that occurs as irregular stools and thick stools. It is also used in patients with hepatic encephalopathy which is a severe liver problem causing confusion, tremors, and low concentration.
Yes, lactulose is a laxative by absorbs water from the body into the colon. It is also used to reduce ammonia levels in the blood of those with liver disease.
Lactulose often causes nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Overdose can cause diarrhea and stomach upset. In such a situation, the dose of medicine should be decreased. Shortness of breath may occur during the first few days of treatment and may disappear over time. This medication can also cause electrolyte imbalances. However, this is a rare problem.
You should take lactulose for as long as your doctor directs. They can also be taken for the duration of the rash, which can be up to a week. Treatment for hepatic encephalopathy can be prolonged, even months.
Lactulose should not be given to patients who are allergic or lactose intolerant (lactose cannot be processed). It should also be avoided in patients with galactosemia, a rare health condition in which the body cannot process galactose.
